How to Fix a Stiff UPVC Door

10 March 2025·5 min read

A stiff UPVC door is one of the most common problems homeowners face. Whether it drags on the frame, refuses to latch, or takes two hands to lock, a stiff door is more than an inconvenience — it can also be a security and energy efficiency risk. Here's what causes it and how to fix it.

Why Do UPVC Doors Become Stiff?

UPVC doors can become stiff for several reasons. The most common is that the door has dropped slightly on its hinges, causing it to catch on the frame or the locking points to become misaligned. This is more likely in older doors or doors that get heavy daily use. Other causes include a worn or broken gearbox (the multi-point locking mechanism), swollen or warped frames due to extreme temperature changes, and built-up dirt or debris in the keep or hinge area.

Check the Hinges First

Before calling a professional, check your hinges. Most modern UPVC doors use adjustable hinges — typically with two or three adjustment points that can be tweaked with an Allen key. If the door is dropping at the latch side, adjusting the hinges to bring the door back into alignment may solve the problem. Look for a hex screw in the hinge itself and turn it clockwise to raise the door or anti-clockwise to lower it.

Lubricate the Locking Points and Hinges

Over time, the moving parts in a UPVC door system can become dry and stiff. A silicone-based lubricant (not WD-40, which can cause damage over time) applied to the hinges, lock mechanism, and the locking bolts that engage with the door frame can make a significant difference. Work the door back and forth after lubricating to spread the product evenly.

When the Problem is More Serious

If lubrication and hinge adjustment don't solve the problem, the issue may be with the gearbox or multi-point locking system. These mechanisms can wear out over time, causing the locking hooks and bolts to fail to operate smoothly. In this case, a professional UPVC door repair is the best option. Attempting to force a door with a broken gearbox can cause additional damage and may leave you locked out.
