UPVC failures don't always happen at a convenient time. A window that won't close, a door that won't lock, or a broken pane of glass can leave your home unsecured — sometimes in the middle of the night. Here's what to do.
Immediate Steps to Secure Your Home
If a window or door cannot be locked, your immediate priority is to prevent unauthorised access. For windows, you can use a window lock wedge (available from most DIY shops) or temporarily screw the window shut using a small self-tapping screw through the frame into the sash as a temporary measure. For doors that won't lock, using a door security bar or bolting it shut internally can provide a short-term fix overnight.
Dealing With Broken Glass
If a window pane has been broken, carefully remove any loose glass from the frame wearing gloves, and cover the opening with thick polythene sheeting or a large piece of plywood secured with gaffer tape. This will keep out the weather and prevent further access until a repair can be made. Never leave a broken pane unboarded overnight.
