Rattling UPVC Door or Window: Causes and Fixes

18 April 2026·4 min read

A rattling UPVC window or door is more than an irritation — it often signals a fault that will worsen over time. The cause varies depending on whether it's a window or a door, and whether the rattle is in the glass, the handle, or the frame. Here's how to identify and fix it.

Rattling Glass in the Frame

If the glass unit itself is rattling inside the frame, the most likely cause is compressed or missing glazing packers. Packers are small plastic blocks that sit under and beside the glass unit to hold it firmly in position within the frame. Over time, packers can compress or work loose, allowing the glass to move slightly. A professional can re-pack the unit without removing it — the glazing beads are taken off, the unit repositioned on fresh packers, and the beads refitted.

Rattling Sash in the Window Frame

If the window sash (the opening part) rattles when closed, the issue is usually that the locking points aren't fully engaging, the sash has dropped slightly on its hinges, or the rubber seals have compressed to the point where there's no longer enough compression to hold the sash firmly. Hinge adjustment and checking that all locking points are engaging correctly usually resolves this. If the seals are the issue, replacement is the answer.

Rattling UPVC Door

A rattling door is most commonly caused by locking points that aren't engaging fully with the keeps in the frame. The door moves in and out on the latch-side hinge, causing noise. Adjusting the hinges to bring the door slightly closer to the frame on the latch side, and checking that the locking hooks are engaging deeply into the keeps, usually eliminates the rattle. Worn or missing keep gaskets (the rubber buffers inside the keeps) can also be replaced inexpensively.

Rattling Handle or Letterbox

Door handles and letterboxes can develop a rattle independently of the door mechanism. Handles rattle when the spindle inside has become loose or when the backplate screws have worked loose. Letterboxes rattle when the internal spring has failed or when the flap is no longer closing fully. Both are quick fixes — tightening screws, replacing the spindle, or fitting a new letterbox unit.
