UPVC and composite doors are heavy — a standard front door can weigh 30kg or more. Over time, this weight can cause the hinges to allow the door to drop slightly. Even a few millimetres of drop can cause problems with locking, draught-proofing, and the long-term wear of the door frame.
Signs Your Hinges Need Adjusting
The most obvious sign is a door that's difficult to lock — the locking bolts won't engage with the keeps in the frame. You might also notice the door dragging on the floor or threshold, a gap appearing at the top corner of the latch side, difficulty pulling the door fully closed, or draughts coming in at the corners of the door.
How Adjustable Hinges Work
Most modern UPVC and composite doors use fully adjustable hinges with adjustment in three axes: vertical (up/down), horizontal (in/out from the frame), and lateral (side to side). Each adjustment point is typically accessed with an Allen key inserted into the side of the hinge. This allows an engineer to fine-tune the door position without dismantling the frame or hinge plate.
When Adjustment Isn't Enough
If the hinges have been over-tightened, corroded, or physically damaged, they may need replacing rather than adjusting. Similarly, if the UPVC frame itself has twisted or moved, hinge adjustment alone won't solve the problem. A professional engineer can assess whether adjustment, hinge replacement, or frame remediation is needed.
