Tilt and Turn Window Problems: Common Faults and Fixes

20 September 2025·5 min read

Tilt and turn windows are popular in modern homes and flats for their dual-opening functionality — tilting inward from the top for ventilation, or swinging fully open from the side. Their more complex mechanism means there are more things that can go wrong. Here's what to look out for.

How Tilt and Turn Windows Work

Tilt and turn windows use a single handle that operates in three positions: closed (handle pointing down), tilt (handle pointing sideways — opens the top inward), and turn (handle pointing up — opens the window fully like a casement). An espagnolette mechanism and a set of specially shaped hinges work together to achieve both functions from the same frame.

Stuck in Tilt Mode

One of the most common tilt and turn problems is a window that won't switch out of tilt mode. This is usually caused by a fault in the corner piece of the espagnolette mechanism, or by the handle being turned out of sequence. Attempting to force the window from tilt into turn mode can damage the mechanism further. A specialist engineer can diagnose whether the corner piece needs adjusting or replacing.

Broken or Stiff Handle

The handle on a tilt and turn window works harder than a standard casement handle because it must engage the mechanism in two different ways. Over time, the spindle inside the handle can wear or snap. If the handle turns freely without operating the window, the spindle has likely failed. Replacement handles must be matched to the mechanism size and type.

Window Won't Fully Close

If a tilt and turn window doesn't fully close, the seals won't compress correctly, leading to draughts. The cause is usually a dropped or misaligned friction hinge on one side. Unlike standard casement hinges, tilt and turn hinges are specific to the system and must be sourced as a matched pair. A professional engineer will adjust or replace the hinges and test the window through both opening modes.

Draughts When Closed

Draughts from a properly closed tilt and turn window usually indicate perished rubber gaskets or seals. Because these windows have seals on all four sides in both the frame and sash, finding the source of the draught requires a systematic check.
