UPVC Window Handle Replacement: A Homeowner's Guide

15 May 2025·3 min read

UPVC window handles are used dozens of times a day, so it's no surprise they eventually wear out. A broken handle can leave a window insecure or impossible to open. Here's what you need to know about replacing them.

Types of UPVC Window Handle

The most common UPVC window handle is the cockspur handle, which hooks over a ramp attached to the frame to hold the window closed. Tilt and turn windows use a different type, often with a 90-degree rotation for opening. Other windows use inline handles attached directly to the espagnolette mechanism. Getting the right type and size is crucial for a proper repair.

Common Handle Problems

Handles can break physically (snapped body or spindle), become stiff or loose due to wear, or stop functioning because the underlying mechanism has failed. Sometimes a handle appears intact but won't operate the window because the spindle connection inside has broken. This requires removing the handle to diagnose properly.

Is It a DIY Job?

Replacing a cockspur handle on an older window can be straightforward if you can source a matching replacement. However, many modern UPVC windows use handles that are integrated with the locking mechanism, making replacement more complex. If you're unsure of the handle type, or if replacing the handle doesn't fix the problem, calling a professional is the safest option.
