UPVC Window Restrictor Replacement Guide

22 May 2026·3 min read

Window restrictors are safety devices that limit how far a casement window can open, typically to around 100mm. They are particularly important in bedrooms on upper floors in homes with children. When they fail or are incorrectly fitted, they can create a serious safety hazard. Here's what you need to know.

What Window Restrictors Do

A window restrictor is a device fitted between the window sash and frame that physically prevents the window from opening beyond a set distance — usually 100mm, as specified in building regulations for windows in rooms accessible to children under 5. Most restrictors have a key-release mechanism that allows adults to fully open the window when needed. The restrictor locks automatically when the window is closed.

Signs Your Restrictor Needs Replacing

Common signs of restrictor failure include: the window opening fully when it shouldn't, the restrictor key no longer releasing the mechanism, the restrictor arm snapping or deforming, or the mounting screws pulling out of the frame. A window that has been forced open beyond the restrictor's limit can damage both the restrictor and the friction stay hinge, sometimes requiring both to be replaced.

Types of Window Restrictor

There are two main types: friction-mounted restrictors that attach to the hinge side of the sash, and cable-type restrictors that use a steel wire to limit opening. The correct type depends on your window design and frame profile. Cable restrictors are generally more discreet; arm-type restrictors are more common on older installations. Getting the correct replacement is important — a poorly fitted restrictor is worse than none.
